Inete Ielite chaired Session 3: Other arenas of governance at the conference City Halls to Cancun Corridors: Navigating climate change from local to global. This session looked at the development of alternative and possible competitive forums of governance in the battle against climate change and environmental protection.
Speakers included representatives from the Green Cross International Annapoorna Boccasam & Xavier Guijarro; Robert Yang of Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute who discussed the responses of private firms to climate change; and Benoit Vermander, Director of the Taipei Ricci Institute, who talked about knowledge networks.
Riga has been taking a lead among the developing new EU nations in combating environmental degradation, poverty and social exclusion. Riga became the the first capital city to sign the
European Convenant of Mayors which now has over 2000 signatories from different local authorities. A commitment to go
"beyond the objectives of EU energy policy in terms of reduction in CO2 emissions through enhanced energy efficiency and cleaner energy production and use."
